What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. Experts consider dental implants as the best treatment for missing teeth, as well as for anchoring dentures and bridges. When there are gaps between your teeth, several problems can arise. First, the bone will begin to disintegrate because it is not being exercised by chewing. Second, the cheek will begin to sag, adding years to your age, and finally, your teeth may shift position, becoming crooked and misaligned. All of these issues are addressed and corrected with dental implants.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post, the artificial tooth root that is surgically embedded in your jawbone. The bone slowly grows around the post just as it does around a natural tooth root. This is one of the most important features of dental implants, because they not only fill the gap, but they also preserve the integrity of the jawbone and improve your overall dental health.

Other advantages of dental implants are:

• Implants look natural and are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth
• Implants are secure and do not make any sound when you speak or chew
• Implants are comfortable because they are permanent and not removable
• Implants make eating and chewing easy and have no dietary restrictions
• Implants improve your self-esteem
• Implants will last for years and sometimes a lifetime

Unlike removable bridges, an implant stands alone and does not require drilling or reducing the teeth on either side of a gap as a fixed bridge does. This means better oral health because flossing is the same as with natural teeth and does not need a special tool as may be required with fixed bridges.

Implants can be used to replace a single tooth anywhere in your mouth or several teeth. They can even be used to replace all of your teeth. The full arch may be attached to only four implants. You will have no cavities or decay in your dental implants. However, you will need to have regular checkups at our office to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy just as with natural teeth. With dental implants, you will never keep your teeth in a glass of water at night.

If you have missing teeth or are thinking about getting dentures or a bridge, dental implants may be your best option. They provide a strong, attractive and long-lasting solution that actually improves the strength of your jawbone and overall dental health.
