What Is Included in Comprehensive Dentistry?

Tooth Restoration

Patient awareness and the use of fluorides has led to a decrease in tooth decay over the years. That said, tooth decay can still sneak up on people due to a variety of reasons. Decay, breakage, and infection are all conditions that should be treated as quickly as possible. That’s why tooth restoration is part of our comprehensive dentistry options.

We are pleased to offer the latest improved techniques and technology. We can provide our patients a variety of options when it comes to restoring their teeth back to their proper health, function, shape, and appearance. When you come in to visit us, we can go over these different options with you. As we examine the problem tooth, we’ll recommend a treatment that we believe will be the most effective and least invasive treatment to suit your needs.

Benefits of Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry can help correct or improve an improper bite. It can relieve pain, fill in unwanted spaces between teeth, and enhance your smile. Repairing decayed or damaged teeth is part of the protocol, as is replacing any missing teeth or old dental treatments that have become ineffective or damaged. Restorative dentistry can also help restore normal chewing and eating abilities.

Root Canal Therapy

When the nerve of a tooth has been attacked by infection or decay, root canal therapy may become necessary. While that may sound intimidating, it’s a gentle process and an excellent way to try and save the diseased tooth.

First, any decay and bacteria will have to be removed from the tooth, as well as the tooth’s pulp. After the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, the empty space left behind will be filled with specialized dental material. This allows the tooth to remain in place and restores its function.

A Root Canal Can Protect Your Other Teeth

Without this treatment, a tooth will often die and have to be removed completely. While it may seem like pulling the problem tooth out would be an obvious solution, a tooth extraction shouldn’t be the first course of action. Tooth extraction is often more costly in the long-run, and removing a tooth can affect the integrity of the rest of your teeth.

On the other hand, root canals enjoy a high success rate and are expected, in most cases, to last a lifetime.

Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy

Patients who are in need of a root canal may notice their tooth is more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures. A small abscess that sometimes looks like a pimple may be present on the gums around your affected tooth. Swelling, tenderness, and a moderate to severe toothache can also be symptoms.

Unfortunately, sometimes either no symptoms are present, or the symptoms are so mild that they’re overlooked. That’s one reason we strongly suggest coming in for regular cleanings, so we can help you catch any issues that are hiding below the surface.

What To Expect

Depending on your needs, several appointments may be required to correct the issue. During the first appointment, your tooth will be numbed and protected from moisture and saliva with a rubber dam. That way we can keep it dry and clean.

An opening will be made at the top of your tooth at this point, and we will use this small opening to extract the diseased pulp and decay with specialized instruments. Once we ensure that the tooth is clean, it can be filled with either a temporary or permanent filling.

The Second Appointment

The inside of the tooth is usually filled during a separate appointment about a week after the first. A crown will be placed over the filling on top of the tooth. This gives the tooth additional strength and protection so you can use the tooth to its full function.

After each appointment, we will send you home with care instructions so you know exactly what to do and what to expect. Good oral hygiene will protect the longevity of your results.

Dental Implants

Sometimes tooth loss is unavoidable, and it’s an issue millions of people struggle with. Periodontal disease or tooth decay can lead to tooth loss, as can an injury.

Regardless of the cause, a person who has to have their tooth removed may feel a sense of personal loss with it. Our team is here to help tackle tooth loss and provide lasting solutions so you can continue to enjoy a complete, natural-looking smile.

Understanding Dental Implants

While we do offer options like dentures and dental bridges, we also are pleased to offer dental implants. These implants replace the function of roots from the tooth you’ve lost. It serves as a permanent foundation for replacement teeth. The replacement teeth themselves can either be temporary or permanent, and are designed to seamlessly blend in with the rest of your smile.

The Process

The process as a whole can be customized based on your needs, as our top concern is providing a treatment that works with you, your comfort levels, and your schedule. The first step of this process is placing a titanium root implant into the slot left behind by your missing tooth. Titanium is extremely biocompatible, so it is readily accepted by the human body.

This rod will merge with the bone in your jaw, which secures it firmly into place and helps prevent the jaw deterioration that usually follows tooth loss. Once the implant has bonded with your jaw, a connective abutment will be attached to the rod. This is what will hold onto your replacement tooth. The replacement teeth are matched to your own teeth by using a reference model of your bite.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants can help buy patients time. By having an implant put into place, it can stop jawbone atrophy and help prevent your other teeth from migrating towards the empty slot. These implants can also support tooth replacements that are fixed in the mouth.

Dentures

Our team offers both complete and partial dentures to give our patients as many options as possible. Partial dentures help fill in the gaps if you’re missing only some of your teeth, and they serve the important role of keeping your other teeth in place so they don’t shift into empty spaces. Full dentures are a complete replacement for your teeth.

Dentures are removable appliances that serve as tooth replacements. They can be a good temporary solution for patients waiting for their permanent replacement teeth, or can be a permanent solution for patients who would rather go with dentures than tooth implants. They may have to be periodically repaired or replaced.

Conventional vs Immediate Dentures

Conventional complete dentures are made for patients after their teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are made in advance, so a patient doesn’t have to go any amount of time without teeth. If you are facing tooth loss in the future, having immediate dentures prepared for you can be a great peace of mind.

Immediate dentures may have to be adjusted slightly as your tissues shrink following tooth removal, but these repairs and adjustments are usually fairly quick and easy.

Reasons To Get Dentures

Both complete and partial dentures can help enhance your smile and help promote a more “full” appearance throughout the mouth and face. It can help improve chewing abilities, which in turn can aid with digestion. Dentures can also help improve speech if your missing teeth are preventing your ability to form clear words.

What To Expect

Molds will be created from your mouth to yield highly accurate, custom-fitted results. Measurements will also be taken as your custom denture is created. A few appointments may be necessary as you test out your new dentures, so we can be sure the fit, color, and shape are perfect for you.
