When Is the Right Time for Dental Implants in Kissimmee?

If you would like to replace missing teeth, dental implants may be your best option. When you talk to our specialist in Kissimmee, your jawbone will be examined because you need healthy bone to receive the implant. It is not recommended for girls under 14 years of age or boys under 17 years of age to get dental implants because their jaws may not be fully formed. In the case of older adults, a bone graft may help make implants possible.

If you have gum disease, infections or decay in one or more teeth, it would need to be treated and healed before you could consider implants. While dental implants will not get cavities or tooth decay, they can get gum disease if it is present in other areas of the mouth. This is why even with implants, good oral hygiene and regular checkups are essential.

You may have infected teeth or gums if you experience:

  • Swollen, bleeding gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • A tooth turning dark
  • Pain in one or more teeth

If you have any of the above symptoms, we prescribe medication and treatment to make your mouth ready to receive implants in Kissimmee at Implant & Comprehensive Dentistry.

Since the procedure for placing implants is a form or surgery, it is important that you be in good overall health before the procedure. This means if you are diabetic, it could affect how your mouth heals, so your blood sugar would need to be stabilized before you had the surgery. Smoking is another thing that affects the healing of tissue. If you smoke, you may be asked to stop for about six weeks before and after the procedure.

There are several reasons why dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth. When a tooth is missing, the bone is not exercised during chewing as it is in places where there are teeth. As the name suggests, implants are implanted into the bone. An artificial root, which is a titanium screw or plate is inserted into the bone, which gradually grows around it and bonds with it. The screw is held firmly in place by the bone just as a natural root is.

Getting implants at the right time is important for the esthetic outcome. Dental implant placement may be done at four main periods after the extraction of a tooth:

  • The implant root is placed in the same socket at the time of the extraction
  • The implant is placed after four to eight weeks so the soft tissue has a chance to heal
  • The implant is placed after 12 to 16 weeks when the bone has had a chance to partially heal
  • The implant is placed after 16 weeks when the extraction socket is completely healed

Dental implants are the best solution for missing teeth for most people. In order to have the highest chance of success, we will decide when the right time for you to have the procedure is. It will depend on the health of your teeth and gums, your overall health and the judgment of our experts. Contact Implant and Comprehensive Dentistry in Kissimmee today to schedule an appointment!
