What Can I Do About Tooth Stains?

No matter what you do to keep your teeth bright and healthy, almost everyone is going to struggle with tooth stains at some point. Brushing multiple times a day is your first line of defense against discoloration, but there may come a point when it feels as if you are fighting an uphill battle. If that sounds like your own situation, then it might be time to consider professional tooth whitening treatments and services. Our team can help you come up with a comprehensive plan to eradicate tooth stains and create a world-class smile.

Types of Tooth Stains

Many patients are surprised to hear that there are actually two different types of tooth discoloration. External discoloration is extremely common, and those stains are almost always the result of improper oral hygiene habits or a diet that is filled with darker food. Even relatively healthy foods and beverages can stain your teeth, and you must brush, floss, and use mouthwash as often as possible if you want to remove the stuff that turns your teeth yellow.

When the inside of a tooth becomes damaged, it can result in internal discoloration. Also known as intrinsic discoloration, internal tooth stains take place when the pulp of a tooth is infected. Some internal stains are also caused by certain medications, but those stains aren’t quite as common. Before whitening your teeth, we will need to determine if you have internal or external stains.

Professional Cleaning and Whitening Treatments

All patients should have their teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year. While these cleaning sessions won’t necessarily remove tooth stains, they can help you avoid some of the oral health issues that cause discoloration. During their appointments, many patients decide to have their teeth professionally whitened as well. Unlike over-the-counter whitening treatments, our team won’t use harsh chemicals that physically strip away the outer layers of your teeth. We use medical-grade whitening techniques that gently lift stains without weakening the enamel.

More comprehensive treatments are needed for internal stains and severe external discoloration. If traditional whitening treatments won’t lift the stains, then we might suggest the use of porcelain veneers. A crown is a similar treatment option, but it encapsulates the entire tooth instead of just covering the front.
