Read on to learn more about the benefits of using these treatments to achieve a beautiful smile.

Orthodontics FAQs: What Is the Right Age for Braces?

Orthodontics is a type of dentistry that is focused on addressing health problems that impact your jaw and teeth. We can use orthodontic techniques to address crowded teeth, crossbites, misaligned teeth, overbites, underbites, and many other types of health problems. Under many circumstances, we will use braces to fix these issues. The right age to receive braces will depend on a number of unique factors.

Receiving a Consultation

If you think that your child may need braces, you should schedule an appointment at our office in Champions Gate. After we have examined your child’s teeth and jaw, we can determine a good time to begin your child’s orthodontic treatment.

Begining Orthodontic Treatments

In general, we will start your child’s orthodontic treatment after they have lost most of their baby teeth and have a majority of their adult teeth. It’s common for your child to lose most of their baby teeth when they are between the ages of eight and 14. At this point, we may begin to provide your child with metal braces.

Receiving Treatment as an Adult

If you didn’t receive braces when you were a child or young adult, don’t worry. Although it’s common to get braces when you are young, this treatment will also work at a later point in your life.

For example, we can use braces to enhance your smile and improve your bite issues when you are in your thirties or forties. Fixing your teeth at this time in your life will reduce your chance of developing headaches and other tooth-related issues. In addition, your braces will give you an even, beautiful smile.

Why Do I Have Orthodontic Issues?

You shouldn’t feel embarrassed or upset if you have misaligned teeth or other orthodontic challenges. Many of these teeth problems run in families. For example, if your parents had crooked teeth, bite problems, or other issues, you will probably have similar problems. In addition, certain habits can increase your risk of developing teeth issues. For example, you may develop orthodontic problems if you sucked your thumb when you were a child.

Why Should I Straighten My Teeth?

If you do not address your misaligned teeth, you will have a higher chance of developing certain types of health conditions. For example, you might experience gum disease, tooth decay, or tooth loss. These problems could be very expensive to correct. In addition, having misaligned teeth can make it difficult for you to chew your food or speak clearly. Your orthodontic issues can also cause jaw problems, headaches, and other negative symptoms.

In addition to improving your health, orthodontics can be a good way to enhance your self-confidence. When you have crooked teeth, you might feel embarrassed about the way that you look. You might be unwilling to smile in photographs or avoid attending social events with your friends. Straightening your teeth will enhance the quality of your smile and allow you to feel more confident about your appearance.

How Long Will I Need to Wear My Braces?

Receiving braces is a great way to quickly correct your orthodontic issues. The specific amount of time that you spend wearing your braces will depend on the type of teeth problems that you are trying to fix. In general, we will instruct you to wear your braces for more time if we are using this orthodontic technique to fix more significant teeth issues. On average, you should expect to wear your braces for one to three years.

After we remove your braces, we will probably give you a retainer to wear. This special device will preserve the improvements in your smile. Since this retainer will be designed to match the condition of your teeth, this device will feel very comfortable. In the beginning, you will probably need to wear your retainer during the day and nighttime. After about six months, you might be able to stop wearing your retainer during the day.

Will I Need to Have My Braces Tightened?

You’ll need to come to our office in Champions Gate for periodic tightening appointments while you are wearing braces. During these meetings, we will tighten the wires that connect your brackets and make other adjustments to your braces. For example, we can fix brackets that have been loose or adjust wires that have shifted.

These periodic tightening sessions will allow us carefully shift your teeth into better places in your mouth. We will also monitor your response to your new braces. It’s normal to visit our office once every month until your treatment is complete.

What Rules Should I Follow While I Am Wearing My Braces?

Since your braces will be very comfortable, you will not be required to make major adjustments to your exercise plans, work, school, or other activities.

Adjusting Your Diet

Although you won’t need to make major lifestyle changes, we will ask you to temporarily change your diet. Eating certain types of food can dislodge your brackets or cause other types of damage to your braces. To protect your braces, you should avoid eating very chewy or hard foods. For example, you should avoid eating chewy candies or raw carrots while you are wearing braces. Further, we will ask you not to bite into whole apples.

Cleaning Your Teeth

In addition to temporarily changing your diet, you might need to adjust your oral hygiene routine. It’s very important to protect your health by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth during your orthodontic treatment. When we provide your braces, we will show you how to move your toothbrush around your wires and brackets. In addition, we may recommend water picks or other devices that can help you clean food debris from your braces.

Should I Receive Dental Cleanings While I Am Wearing My Braces?

Receiving regular dental cleanings is a good way to reduce your risk of developing cavities and other types of dental issues. As a result, you should continue to get regular cleanings while you are using braces or other orthodontic methods to improve your smile.

The Frequency of Your Cleanings

Although it’s common to receive a professional cleaning twice every year, you might need to get more frequent cleanings if you have certain risk factors.

For example, we might advise you to receive more frequent cleanings if you have diabetes or other health conditions. In addition, you might be required to receive cleanings every three or four months if you are a smoker, are currently pregnant, or take certain types of medications. When we provide your braces, we can suggest a good cleaning schedule for you.

Removing Plaque

It’s common to feel a bit nervous when you schedule your initial dental cleaning. Fortunately, this treatment will be brief and comfortable. After we have examined your mouth, we will use a special tool to remove tartar and plaque from your gum line and teeth. If you have a large amount of plaque, this treatment will take longer to complete.

Completing Your Cleaning

After we have finished removing your plaque, we will use a powerful brush and toothpaste to polish your teeth. Next, we will floss between each of your teeth and ask you to use water to rinse your mouth. Depending on your needs, we may also provide you with a fluoride treatment during your cleaning. This treatment will protect your teeth from tartar and bacteria. This entire process will take about one hour to finish.

Can I Get Braces if I Have Crowns or Missing Teeth?

Under some circumstances, you will be able to get braces if you have crowns, root canals, or missing teeth. For example, we can use special techniques to attach your brackets to your crowns. We may also be able to use braces to close up a gap in your smile or correct other problems that are related to your missing teeth.

Can I Use Other Techniques to Straighten My Teeth?

In the past several years, there have been many advancements in the field of orthodontics. As a result, we offer braces that are much more comfortable and attractive than the orthodontic treatments that were used in the past. That said, we understand that you might prefer to use other methods to improve your smile. For example, we may be able to use Invisalign to fix your misaligned teeth, bite problems, and other orthodontic conditions.

If you select this option, we will make unique aligners that will be designed to gradually shift your teeth. These aligners will be constructed out of a smooth type of plastic. Since this material is transparent, your aligners will be very discreet. During your treatment, you will switch out your aligners every 14 days. As you continue to wear new sets of aligners, your bite problems and other teeth issues will gradually improve.

Can I Use Professional Teeth Whitening Techniques Once I Have Finished Wearing Braces?

Drinking tea, coffee, or wine can stain your teeth and change the appearance of your smile. After you use braces or Invisalign to straighten your teeth, you might be interested in receiving a professional treatment that will give you a bright, attractive smile. You will usually need to receive two teeth whitening sessions. During your first session, we will create molds of your teeth. We will use these molds to create customized plastic trays for you.

During your second session, you will receive your customized trays. For the next several weeks, you will need to use these trays to apply a powerful whitening solution onto your teeth. Under some circumstances, we may instruct you to wear your trays for 30 minutes twice every day. If your teeth are very strained, we may instruct you to wear these trays while you are sleeping.

Improve Your Smile

You shouldn’t spend the rest of your life suffering from headaches, TMJ syndrome, or other health issues. Fixing your crowded teeth, misaligned teeth, or other orthodontic issues is a good way to improve your health and enhance your appearance.
