Five Tips for When You’re Wearing Dentures for the First Time

If you have problem teeth or missing teeth, getting complete or partial dentures can improve your smile and confidence. However, living with dentures requires you to follow specific guidelines to maintain good oral health. In this post, Dr. Steven Hewett, a recognized leader in the field of implants and reconstructive dentistry, provides some tips for wearing dentures.

Clean Your Dentures Regularly

You should clean your dentures daily to keep them in good shape and to prevent them from becoming loose. Regular cleaning also prevents odor-causing bacteria from accumulating on your dentures. Don’t use common cleaning agents or toothpaste. Instead, use a soft towel with warm tap water.

Brush Your Gums and Tongue on a Daily Basis

Whether you’re wearing dentures or not, brushing your tongue and gums is important for maintaining good oral health. You should clean your tongue and gums on a daily basis to remove bacteria that can cause gum disease. Unlike when you brush your natural teeth, brushing your tongue and gums requires you to use a brush with soft bristles.

Avoid Wearing Them While Sleeping

There is no problem wearing your removable false teeth at night. However, it’s a good idea to remove them before you go to bed. This gives your jaws and gums a chance to relax. Wearing your false teeth 24 hours a day can also alter the shape of your mouth. Our professionals can give you specific guidelines to follow when wearing or removing your appliance.

Store Them in Warm Water

Since these devices are an investment for your oral health, it’s important to keep them wet. You should store them in warm water at night or whenever you’re not using them. Storing them in warm water prevents your false teeth from drying out or losing their shape.

Avoid Shouting or Talking Loudly

Wearing false teeth also requires you to change your talking habits. It’s a good idea to avoid shouting or talking loudly when you are wearing them for the first time, as they consist of sensitive materials which can easily break. Speaking slowly, therefore, prevents your dentures from falling from the gums or becoming loose.
