What Are Dental Implants?

Just because you have one or more missing teeth doesn’t mean you need to struggle with removable dentures and bridges. Dental implants provide patients with unparalleled comfort and allow them to once again speak and smile with confidence. If you have recently lost a permanent tooth or are getting ready for a tooth extraction, then it is a good idea to learn about the benefits of modern dental implants.

Traditional Treatment Options for Missing Teeth

While there have been quite a few amazing advances in the field of dentistry in recent years, studies show us that most adults will lose at least a handful of permanent teeth in their lifetime. When a tooth is lost or extracted, it is absolutely vital to replace it as quickly as possible. Untreated tooth loss can result in a variety of secondary issues, including severe malocclusion, bone erosion, gum disease and tooth decay.

While traditional treatment options, such as dentures, can be beneficial in some situations, they are not always enough. Many find them to be unsightly, uncomfortable and too time-consuming to care for. These are a few reasons why so many have made the switch to dental implants for a complete smile restoration.

Modern Dental Implants

Teeth actually perform a very important function when it comes to the health of one’s jaws. Not only do the bones provide a sturdy platform for the teeth, but they are also stimulated and kept strong by the roots. Dental implants are actually anchored into the patient’s mouth and will continue to stimulate the bone. A small titanium rod will form a bond with the jaw before an abutment is attached. Once the abutment is in place, an artificial tooth is placed over the implant.

If consecutive teeth are missing, then two implants can be anchored in the jaw to form a strong platform for a bridge. Multiple sets of implants are also a great option for a full smile restoration with fixed dentures. Instead of the dentures staying in place because they are even against the gums, they will be held firm with implants that are strategically placed throughout the patient’s mouth.
