Protect and Strengthen Your Teeth with Porcelain Crowns

A crown is used in dentistry to cover the remaining part of a damaged or decayed tooth in order to restore it to full function and give it a normal appearance. They are frequently used to save teeth that might otherwise have to be extracted. Dental crowns will also strengthen teeth that are weakened due to a crack or another problem.

Crowns are made from a variety of materials with each one having its own advantages. Porcelain crowns are among those that look the most like the natural teeth. The color can be adjusted to match the adjacent teeth so that other people will not notice a difference. Sometimes, porcelain fused over metal can be used to add strength. These crowns are more commonly used for the back teeth, where an exact color match is not as critical, but strength is more important for biting and chewing. Crowns that are all porcelain look the most natural and are more easily adjusted in color to provide an exact match.

People who have an allergy to metal may be better suited for all-porcelain crowns to avoid any adverse reactions. Even when allergies are not an issue, all-porcelain makes a good choice for the front teeth. When there is metal under the porcelain, it can sometimes show at the gum line. This is not an issue with the back teeth, as the metal would not be visible anyway.

If you have a tooth that does not look natural, whether the cause is natural or from trauma, you should ask our dentist about the use of a porcelain crown. They can be used in cases where the teeth are abnormally shaped in order to give them a normal look. Sometimes, crowns are used to hold bridges in place. They are placed over the teeth next to the open gap where the bridge will be used. They can also be used to cover dental implants.

If you have teeth that need attention beyond the basic fillings, you might want to ask our experienced and skilled dentist at Implant and Comprehensive Dentistry about the various advantages of porcelain crowns. We have offices in both Champions Gate and Winter Haven. Contact us today to schedule a consultation for porcelain crowns.
