Invisalign: Is it for Everyone?

Invisalign® is probably one of the best things that ever happened in the world of dentistry. These clear aligners are a popular alternative to braces because they discreetly fix your teeth without giving you a mouthful of metal. It can be removed and cleaned easily, something people with braces will never enjoy doing. At Implant and Comprehensive Dentistry, one of the most frequently asked questions about Invisalign® is “Is it for everyone?”. If something this good is suitable for everyone, then why are braces still existing?

It Depends on the Problem
To be qualified for Invisalign®, the dental issues must be within a certain range of severity for it to be effective. There are problems that require a more advanced fix, especially when the jaw is involved. The clear aligners can only fix certain issues like:

• Teeth gaps
• Crowded teeth
• Minor cases of overbite, underbite, or crossbite

An orthodontist would need to assess your teeth first to determine if it can be fixed by clear aligners or if the traditional braces would benefit you more.

It Depends on How Old You Are

Invisalign® is highly recommended for teenagers and adults. It is, however, not ideal for younger teens and children because their teeth are still in the growing phase. Older teens love these clear aligners because they won’t have to face the stigma that comes with wearing orthodontic braces or metal retainers. The same goes for adults who need to have their teeth fixed without looking like a teenager with braces. Definitely a confidence-booster.

It Depends on How Disciplined You Are

If you want to use Invisalign®, it is crucial that you keep it on for at least 22 hours per day. You can only remove it when you need to eat or drink beverages other than water. This seems easy but because these clear aligners are so easy to remove and put back, there is a tendency to keep it off often and neglect the 22-hour rule. As a result, it won’t really fix your teeth at all. Unlike with braces, it really does the fixing because you can’t take it off. It is working 24/7. If you are not disciplined or determined enough to have your teeth fixed, clear aligners are not for you.

It Depends on What Our Dentist Says

Invisalign® has an online assessment test that anyone can take to check if they are a good candidate for their clear aligners. It will ask you to provide a bit of information about yourself and what type of dental issue you want to be fixed. Convenient as it is, a consultation with a dentist will yield more reliable results.
