Different Kinds of Tooth Stains and How to Remove Them

If you are bothered by tooth stains, you are not alone. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), teeth brightening is one of the most sought after cosmetic dentistry services. Tooth stains are caused by a wide range of factors, each unique and requiring a specific treatment approach. Implant & Comprehensive Dentistry specializes in addressing the following causes of tooth discoloration.
1. Extrinsic Tooth Stains
These stains discolor the enamel, the first and hard layer that protects the other layers of the teeth. This is the part of the tooth that is exposed to the drinks and food you consume. It absorbs the color residue of the drinks and foods like coffee, wine, and berries. Since these stains affect the outer layer of the teeth, it is easy to clear them using whitening toothpaste. This toothpaste removes discoloration by gently abrading the teeth with light scrubbing. However, if the whitening agent in the toothpaste is not effective, especially when dealing with intense stains, you need to consult our dentist for a professional deep cleaning to whiten your teeth. It is important that you avoid strong-colored foods and beverages days following the procedure to ensure a lasting result.
2. Intrinsic Tooth Stains
These kinds of stains occur on the teeth’s interior when the dentin (the region after the enamel) is stained. The dentin’s natural yellowish color becomes visible following the deterioration of the enamel due to poor oral health. Intrinsic stains can be caused by injuries to the teeth or excessive use of tetracycline antibiotics during childhood.
Since intrinsic stains occur inside the teeth, you cannot remove them using regular teeth whitening toothpaste. Instead, you need to visit the dentist’s office for professional whitening. You may also use at-home whitening kits to remove such stains. These kits contain active ingredients that remove both surface and deep stains. Stubborn intrinsic stains can also be covered using dental restorations like bonds and crowns.
3. Age-Related Tooth Stains
With age, your teeth’s dentin will become darker as the enamel wears down. This can, in turn, result in teeth staining or discoloration. Subject to the severity of the discoloration, our dentist will recommend penetrative treatment using in-office whitening procedures or home bleaching kits.
Tooth stains can greatly affect your self-esteem. Understanding the root cause of the discoloration is the first step in your journey to whiter and brighter teeth.
