How Can Porcelain Veneers Improve My Smile?

We all grow up hearing that brushing, flossing and regular trips to the dentist will keep our smiles beautiful, but those habits are not always enough. There may come a time when you find yourself dealing with serious cosmetic problems, such as gaps between your teeth, chipped teeth and severe stains. When these issues take place, porcelain veneers may be your best option for brightening and straightening your smile unlike ever before.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are nothing more than thin shells that are attached directly to the front of a patient’s teeth. Each veneer is custom made so that they perfectly fit over the natural teeth. Depending on how well you care for your veneers, these devices can last for up to 20 years. If they ever become chipped or stained, then you can simply replace them with a new set. While other materials can be used to create veneers, most dentists agree that porcelain is the best option due to its color and durability.

Treatable Cosmetic Issues

Veneers have been used for nearly 100 years to treat a wide variety of cosmetic issues. These devices are an excellent option for those who are unhappy with the size, placement, shape or color of their teeth. While more extensive treatments, such as braces, can produce similar results, they often take years before the full effects are seen.

The Ideal Candidate

Practically any adult patient who is unhappy with the appearance of their smile due to severe cosmetic issues will make a great candidate for porcelain veneers. The only prerequisite is that the patient is in relatively good health. Those who are dealing with gum disease or tooth decay will need to address those issues first. Porcelain veneers are an excellent way to improve the appearance of your smile, but they will not treat any oral health problems.

Creating and Applying Porcelain Veneers

From start to finish, porcelain veneers generally require two appointments spaced a few weeks apart. During your first appointment, the dentist will shape the surface of the teeth so that the veneers sit in the correct position. Once that has been done, exact measurements will be taken of your gums and teeth.

Creating the veneers themselves typically takes weeks. On the day of the final appointment, the veneers are applied to the patient’s teeth with a powerful bonding agent. A light is then used to harden and set the bond.

Caring for Your Porcelain Veneers

Most patients head back to work the day after having their veneers bonded to their teeth. You can care for your veneers just as you cared for your natural teeth. That includes brushing and flossing multiple times a day and visiting the dentist at least twice a year.
