If you have just broken or chipped your tooth, don’t panic. There are different ways the dentist can fix a chipped tooth depending on the extent and location of the damage. However, it is important to see our dentist as soon as possible to avoid the risk of getting an infection or damaging the tooth further.
Here are some three ways our dentists at Implant & Comprehensive Dentistry can use to repair your chipped tooth:
Dental Bonding
This procedure is done on a tooth with a minor chip, by filling it with a tooth-like composite resin. In cases where the damaged tooth is visible when you smile, the chipped area is etched and adhesive material is applied to allow the composite resin to adhere securely. The bonding material is then shaped to fit the tooth naturally and finally hardened by ultraviolet light to complete the process.
Dental Veneers
A dental veneer is appropriate for a chipped front tooth. It is a thin covering that conceals the front of the tooth fully, with the chipped part a bit thicker to substitute the missing piece.
On the first visit, the dentist will remove the surface layer of the tooth and get veneer impressions that will be used to make the veneer. On the second visit, a special cement is applied to the veneer and placed on the tooth, then hardened using ultraviolet light.
Dental Crown
A chipped tooth with decay, a large chip, or chip on molar teeth might need a dental crown, otherwise known as a cap. The dentist will grind away the remaining tooth and cover it with a crown which can be made from ceramic, metal, resin or porcelain fused to metal. You can choose which type to use based on their benefits. For example, the metal crowns are stronger than the others but more expensive.
In the case where the visible tooth is completely broken, an endodontist (a specialist in root canal) will place a post or pin in the root and create a structure that can support a crown. The dentist will then permanently cement the crown on the structure.
